Day Thirty Five: Detox

Dear David,

Day one of 48hr detox. I have been very good. I have done zero exercise but I have not chewed anything. My body does not feel hungry but my mind is starving. If one of my colleagues had sat a little too still today, I would have gnawed them.

Had thermo bubbles and some super juice too. Detox is basically taking 120mls out of the big juice bottle 4 times a day and diluting it with water. It tastes ok but it's hard mentally not to be chewing on something...

Roll on Wednesday!

Day Thirty Three & Day Thirty Four: A.K.A The weekend

Dear David,

It was my father's birthday this weekend so I was on breakfast in bed duty. He got quite a haul of gifts and we got the pleasure of singing 'When I'm 64', rather than Happy Birthday. Span into Glasgow for another Colonic at the Buckingham Clinic with Sally and then took mother and father out for lunch and then headed home. I went to Kember and Jones in the West End - simply heavenly. Totally cheated and had a goats cheese salad but am doing the 48-hr detox on Monday so I relished it, positively savoured every bite! I was in a coma for about 10.30pm.

Today I have been doing mainly administrative tasks - expenses, a bit of work, cleaning, washing - and other things of a generally tedious nature. I need to find an old SQL script on an old USB key and I will need to clean out my closet to find it. I am currently mustering up the energy to start this rather arduous task. Why do I procrastinate so much? I have found an app from Andrew Johnston, the clinical hypnotherpist, to stop one procrastinating - it is no word of a lie that I can't seem to get round to listening to it. I will, I must.....

I've been reading this week about the Body-Rocka, a kind of wobble board that really helps with core strength. I think I might buy one. I am finding it really difficult to find a space to exercise with the exercise ball and need to adapt some of your DVD into a program that is going to fit my lifestyle, the space (or lack of it) in my home and my hellish schedule. Roll on the warmer weather and lighter nights when it's going to be easier to start the running training.

There also appears to be a running club at work. I am being a bit of chicken as all I have to do to join is email. The reasons I have not emailed are;

1. I may be totally shit at running and, if this is the case, I'd rather find it out on my own that in a group
2. They will all be amazingly fit and toned and I'll look like a fat pie in running gear
3. I will make a total ass of myself, sweat profusely and turn bright red, lose a lung and collapse after the first 10 minutes

Are these all excuses, David? Yes, I suppose they are but they are also genuine fears. I do need to suck it up and just do it. Feel the fear and all that. Mind over matter. I know this all makes sense. I am still working my way through demolishing 1, 2 and 3. 4 is finding the ultimate sports bra but I have that nailed. Triumph Tri-Action Extreme Sports Bra

Made an almost oil free harissa paste last night too which I then sunk into a tomato sauce and slow cooked some turkey in it.

Harissa Recipe

  • 10-12 dried red chili peppers
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tsp of olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground caraway seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
Soak the dried chillies in hot water for 30 minutes. Drain and then remove stems and seeds. Combine chillies, garlic, salt and olive oil and blend. Add the spices and blend to form a smooth paste. Store in an airtight container.

Turkey with Harissa
  • 500g of passata
  • 300g of turkey mince
  • 2 tablespoons of harissa paste
  • half an aubergine - diced
Use spray oil to season pan and brown the turkey mince over a very low heat. Add the passata and paste and leave on low simmer for 15 minutes. Add the aubergine and leave to simmer on low heat for 30 minutes. Serve. Yum.

And now I am off to stop putting off finding the elusive USB key...

Day Thirty and Day Thirty One: forging ahead

Dear David,

I got an email back from blissworld today. They asked me what samples I wanted. I told them I didn't have anything specific in mind and that free samples are meant to be random gifts that persuade you into buying more stuff so I said I would leave it at their discretion. I was in a bit of a cranky mood today.

I get the bus at 6.45am every morning and, once on the bus, I promptly fall asleep. That is until this physic vampire started getting on at Harthill. Despite many free seats, she wakes me up every morning by poking me in the arm. I made a groaning noise yesterday morning and she bit the face off me. She went mental and started shouting about her being able to sit where she likes. I asked her why me and if she fancied me? She shut up and was not on the bus this morning. All us regulars were awake at Harthill this morning to show a united front, also because this woman is chav-tastic and I was sure she would come back with a posse.

No sign of her but bus was positively tropically warm. We all puffed and sweated all the way to Edinburgh. I was surprised when I reached my final destination and it was not Caracas.

I found a great quote today;

You cannot dream yourself into a character; you must hammer and forge yourself one.
James A. Froude
English historian (1818 - 1894)

Exercise this evening definitely felt like forging and hammering! I was going to do the DVD tonight but no space in the living room and I just could not be bothered. Going to clean energetically! I am going to do some high intensity tomorrow morning and rest tomorrow night.

Day Twenty Nine: not bliss

Dear David,

Well another day in hell! None of my desk buddies were in work today and I felt like I was going stir crazy! Ordered a bulk order of shakes, vitamin superjuice etc from blissworld.co.uk. Huge spend and box arrived with NO free samples - how scabby, how cheap. I'll be sticking to space nk in the future. Diabolical.

Going to get up early tomorrow to do some high intensity training. Found a video on YouTube - epic!

Day Twenty Eight: Ennui...

Dear David,

What an epically boring day! Work is really, really slow right now and today was like pulling teeth. I tried to focus, invent things to do, entertain myself....

I ended up googling, doing the crossword, reading the paper and prevaricating. I talked at my poor colleagues, rambled, my mind addled with the complete, all-consuming ennui. I spent 300 quid in John Lewis and planned two lives abroad in two different countries. There is nothing I don't know about world affairs! Arrrgggghhhhhhhh......

I was reading the exercise plan tonight and looking at the 'office workout'. Darling David, you are wonderful but what kind of mental office do you think exists where I can lay prostrate on a ball without causing a stir? No, no, no.

Maybe it's ok in America. In Scotland, I'd be institutionalised!

Off to watch Glee!!!

Day Twenty Seven: All About Eve

Dear David,

Lovely day today. Went into Glasgow to have a browse in the shops and went for lunch at Fifi and Ally - a simply scrumptious salad of warm smoked salmon, rocket, capers and dijon mustard. Delightful.

Went to the Farmers Market yesterday morning so have an array of meat and vegetables to prepare some lunch meals this evening. The pièce de résistance was the rather large chicken I bought from the St. Brides poultry farm - positively the best chicken I have ever tasted. Got a smaller one to make some stock as well. Yum. Going to make a derth of meals to freeze this evening to prevent any idle hands and a repeat of the chips/jaffa cakes incident.

Treated myself to facial this evening with the help of the lovely Eve Lom. Skin is looking fantastic at the moment and am careful to use products now with little to no chemicals and organic, where possible. Eve Lom cleanser, followed by Dr.Organic Manuka Honey Scrub and then Eve Lom TLC Radiance Cream - lovely! Skin smoother than a baby's bum now.

Off to cook up a storm.

Day Twenty Four, Twenty Five and Twenty Six: Back on the chain gang

Dear David,

Chips and Jaffa Cakes (turned in 7) are a distant memory and have got back on track. It's been hard though - I did beat myself up a lot about the cheat, felt really disappointed with myself. I would say it was not worth it but it was great. Admittedly, it did not taste as good as I thought it would but it was still pretty epic.

What I was reading the next day was that if you have low blood pressure (mine is on the floor) then you should not have a low sodium diet. I think the craving for chips might have been a salt craving. I have been nearly drinking sachets of it over the last few days so am going to the doctor to get some salt tablets. The jaffa cakes was flagelation, the 'well, I have fecked it up now so I might as well do it with style'. As I said before, I don't even like them.......craziness.

Whilst out on a Google walk, I also found a great site, FitDay, that allows you to keep an online daily journal of your diet and exercise. It's free and it's exceptional. It allows you to search for foods and add them to your daily list of foods consumed. It has all the nutritional information stored and you can adjust quantities and portions. It also allows you to edit the nutritional information of the foods that you find. For example, I searched for 'protein shake' and the nutritional information was different from that of the DK Protein Shake so I edited the information accordingly and stored it to my profile to reuse it.

When you have finished entering your foods for the day, you can view a pie chart report that shows a breakdown of what you have had in fat, protein, carbohydrates and alcohol. It also shows what vitamins and minerals you have consumed and what you are missing or what your diet for that day has lacked. You can also see this over a user-defined period; allowing you to see if, for example, you are consistently eating foods that are not giving you enough Vitamin B.

You can record your training schedule, exercise and mood. You can set your diet goals and track your progress. It really is a fantastic service and did I mention? It's FREE!

It's really helpful to visualise weight loss and to keep focused on your goals (says Jaffa Cake lady). I have found it particulary great for visualising how many nutrients and vitamins I am getting into my system and it was good for seeing how much damage I did with the chips/jaffa cake day.

Went out last night to a ceilidh evening that was raising money for HCPT. It's a charity which organises Pilgrimage holidays to Lourdes in France for people of all ages and abilities. CPT - The Pilgrimage Trust was formed in 1956 after a young doctor, Michael Strode, first took four children with disabilities on a Pilgrimage holiday to Lourdes and at the same time revolutionised the way children with disabilities could experience a trip to this famous international shrine in the foothills of the French Pyrenees.

Not content with letting the children stay in the usual hospitals and hospices, Dr. Michael wanted them to stay in hotels as honoured guests and to get as much out of their holiday as other children. HCPT now takes to Lourdes almost 2000 children from the UK, Ireland and increasingly from other countries. The children have a wide range of physical and mental disabilities, or are physically and emotionally deprived or neglected.

Cared for by voluntary helpers, including doctors, nurses and chaplains, most of whom pay for themselves, the total size of the Easter Pilgrimage is now about 5000; the largest pilgrimage from the UK and Ireland and probably the largest children's pilgrimage from any country.

A fantastic night - no need for alcohol and had a great time. Company was super, danced my legs off and raised money for a great cause. An excellent evening!

Day Twenty Three: David or chips? David or chips?

Dear David,

Well, the stress of the last few days has caught up with me. Craved chips all day. Wandering Wullie made quiche and chips for his dinner so I had 5 of them and then inhaled 3 Jaffa cakes. Why, o why?!

Well it's done now. Back on track tomorrow. Going to bed before it becomes 12 Jaffa cakes. I don't actually even like them. This is akin to self-harm, self flagellation.

Off to the land of nod and the restorative power of meditation plus sleep.

Day Twenty One: Stress Central

Dear David,

Had big decisions to make today which totally stresses me out. This is usually a trigger for grubbing it big style. I think I have a very emotional relationship with food and being the most anxious person on the planet does not help the urge to binge. You talk of sound body, sound mind but I think the sound mind is a precursor to weight loss. A big part of this journey starting was working through my terrible anxiety issues. Christ, I sound like I should be prostrate on a couch, lying next to a man in a white coat! But we all have our hang ups, our problems, our vices.....

It's useless to work on getting the best body I can and neglect my mind, which matters more to me, if truth be told. Today thoughts turn to love and I know that you love a mind for longer than you can ever love a body. Christopher Reeve said it perfectly, 'I am not my body'.

And I am not my body. However, when my body is a manifestation of my mind, or rather manifests what might be wrong with it then I need to heal my heart and my mind. The changes to my body are the pleasant bi-product.

I found the most wonderful app for anxiety, a self-hypnosis session that allows you to heal panic and anxiety. By meditating, using cognitive behavioural therapy, I have started a recovery that hopefully will culminate in contentment and a body that properly represents who I am - my energy, my vitality. Wouldn't mind looking great at the wedding either!

Day Twenty One: My Vintage Valentine

Dear David,

Happy Vintage Valentine! 'Fork over your heart' with the demented doll is a particular favourite. More of a threat than a declaration of love. She'd boil your bunny!

Day Twenty: Two Fat Ladies - 18 not 88

Dear David,

Lazy-ish day today. Went to aunties for dinner and had to bring stuff to cook as she was making a roast lamb, spuds and jelly and ice cream for pudding. Went over a little early and prepared some plan friendly dinner. She was very interested in plan and I think we may have another potential devotee! Marydoll had lots of wine, as did auntie, and this resulting in lots of choir-style singing. Panis Angelicus sung by two inebriated women in their 60s is quite an experience. They reminisced over days gone by and talked of dividends at the Cooperative and the lovely puddings my granny used to make.

Through the stories of rice puddings, tarts and jelly, I chowed down on sardines, roasted in the oven with fennel, red peppers and aubergine. Added fennel seed, fenugreek and tarragon. Very, very tasty, if I do say so myself.

Could not resist temptation and weighed myself this morning! What a delight met my eyes. I have lost 2 ladies or 18 pounds, as each lady represents 9 pounds. Deeelightful! Only 7 more ladies to go....

P.S Edinburgh, get over the big glasses, just get over them. Glasgow likes them.

Day Eighteen & Nineteen:

Dear David,

Another colonic this morning but not with Kim. Kim has jetted off to Chicago as her sister's husband has died so she is going to keep her company. I went to the Buckingham Clinic instead to the lovely Elaine. She knows Kim and calls her Tenko as Kim has a more agressive approach to colonic hydrotheraphy. It was a different experience this morning but found both styles had the same result and desired effect! Same price but was also given a free bottle of probiotics as I left. I was finished at ten and headed down to Byres Road. Byres Road is the heart and soul of the West End of Glasgow and is easily the most cosmopolitan and eclectic streets that this glorious city has to offer.

Went to Booly Mardy's for far and away the best egg white omelette to date, full of chives and served with really fresh side salad. Rambled down to Ruthven Lane and had a look in the collection of shops there. Bought some jewellery and headed to Roots and Fruits back on the main street to get some fennel, garlic, pak choi and almonds. I have not been able to find fennel in any of the large supermarkets. I want to make roasted fennel and garlic to go with my fish for dinner tomorrow night.

Met Madame Mudgeon for lunch in Stravaigan and had hake and greens after some epic Meg Ryan style ordering. Lots of green tea and hot water too.Talked about her exciting date this evening with some man that does installation art. Sounded like he had planned quite an evening! Wandered down to Princes Square and went to...you've guessed it....Cos and Space NK. Got chatting with Julie and Jamie who work in Space NK and we were talking about your mythical thermo bubbles. They truly are amazing.

As opposed to many diet products that come in pill, tablet and capsule form, Thermo Bubbles a powder that you mix with water to make an effervescent drink.  They suppress the appetite, burn unwanted fat and boost energy levels. Thermo bubbles promote thermogenesis; the process of heat production in organisms.

It is a significant component of the metabolic rate and thermogenesis can therefore be stimulated to increase energy expenditure and fat oxidation. Thermogenics are commonly made up of ephedra, bitter orange, capsicum, ginger, guar gum, and pyruvate. Caffeine and EGCG, both found in green tea, may increase thermogenesis.

The primary active ingredients found in Thermo Bubbles beverages contain a unique combination of antioxidant-rich green tea, white tea, guarana, ginseng and B vitamins, for boosting energy and metabolism and ultimately burning calories and fat at a faster rate. It also contains Chromium Picolinate to help curb your appetite and L-arginine to promote lean muscle mass. Full details of the contents are shown below.

The amount of energy that these give you is incredible. I can't drink caffeine at all. I become jittery, my heart races, I can even weep if I drink it. It is just too toxic for my system but the caffeine in Thermo Bubbles has a totally different effect on me. I have boundless energy and I feel fantastic. Best thing about the plan!

Day Seventeen: Run for your life

Dear David,

What a day! Had an interview this morning with the unpleasant creature that ever walked the face of the earth. I had to restrain myself from hitting her squarely in the face. Started badly with her giving me a test; a paragraph about trade execution and I had to draw the business process. After 7 years in my profession, I take absolute issue with this kind of approach. She grilled me, picked through CV, sneered, sniffed and mocked. She said that she thought my experience was all web and asked if I agreed. I said that my experience was financial services, that I delivered complex financial trading applications, accountacy packages and reporting solutions with many kinds of user interfaces and that I saw web as merely the front-end or UI of an application. She sniffed, curled her lip and said 'Well, if you say so'. I said I thought she was being rather curt. Why do some interviewers do this? You glean exactly the same amount of information but both of you leave with a bad taste in your mouth. It's so devisive and so pointless.

She finished by asking me what I thought of the Agile method. I said 'I think it's like Communism. Good in theory but falls down when you apply human nature to it. If used in a company where there a culture of good communication, accountability and excellence, agile works. Otherwise, it's a posh name for fix and build/quick and dirty with limited documentation and not a lot of governance'. I know the company loves Agile and wondered if this would get a rise out of her. It did. Result.

Agile is always prevalent in companies where developers are reverred as Gods and think they are above writing or working from documentation. I have met two developers in my entire working life who are actually capable of this. I have worked in companies where Agile has been implemented in its purest form, adhered to and the teams have been of the highest calibre people - it's like project utopia, utter heaven. In most places, however, it's very unorganised chaos and the arch enemy of any test team I have ever come across.

Phoned agency immediately after and told them to withdraw application toute-de-suite as I thought the role was not a good fit for me. What I actually wanted to say was - why, oh why would I ever want to work with such an acidic, ascerbic, antagonistic, meglomaniac weirdo? The Oscar Wilde quote sprang to mind, 'Fools ask questions the wise cannot answer'. However, get mad, then get over it. Cleansed my chakras on way back to work as I am sure they were all spinning at the colour of red!

I was going to write more about meditation and more about vitamins but, as a consumate procrastinator, tomorrow is always the most productive day of the week. I just need some time to write something that is not half-assed, which is what I think I would produce this evening.

Got some wonderful new this evening though - I have been accepted in the ballot for the Great North Run. Bring it on!

Day Sixteen: Working Girl

Dear David,

Another good day today but full of temptations! Came face to face with a Cherry Pie sitting in the kitchen; warm, just out of the oven, a slice out of it and a knife sitting there, calling to me. I turned my back on the pie and went upstairs to seek solace in Mabel. Glad I didn't touch it as when I came down Working Girl was on - definitely in my list of all time favourites films - and Melanie Griffiths was in her lingerie. If there is anything that will get a girl motivated to lose weight, that will do it.

Mabel was a hard task master tonight and I was reluctant to get going and jumped off after 45 minutes. I was quite flat today. A boring day in the office and I was not in good form after 1 hour of pure, unadulterated smut from one of the boys on the bus. The bus that I get to work is full of regulars and we all know each other, by sight or by name. We generally all have a really good laugh. One of the chaps, nice guy, has taken to chatting to me in the morning and he has a particularly hardcore brand of smuttiness. This morning's conversation was positively blue - I genuinely cannot handle it. It makes me totally embarassed. The more I try to fend it off, the worse it got this morning. I find it totally disrespectful so then I spiralled into horrible thoughts why he would think it was ok to talk to me that way, would he talk to someone he respected that way, is he only talking to me like that because I look like a balloon? Or worse, is he a weirdo chubbie chaser? Hysteria, high drama and anxiety!

Thought about it too much and it definitely affected my mood today so I cleaned my chakras on the way home. I found a great chakra meditation from Bowdoin College. The Chakras, first mentioned in the ancient Vedas, the Hindu books of knowledge, is the name given to the seven main energy centers of the body. These energy centres regulate the energy flow throughout our bodies. These centres open and shut depending on what we are feeling and thinking.

Chakras are not physical objects that can be seen, but they are an integral part of our life force keeping our whole mind and body working together. They are located at different points throughout the physical body and are associated with particular parts of the body.Every sense, feeling and experience is connected to a specific chakra. When you are stressed about something, the chakra itself can become unbalancined and this manifests itself as illness or stress in your physical body. Some further reading: The Chakra Bible: The Definitive Guide to Chakra Energy

For your mind, emotions and physical body to be working together in total harmony, the chakras need to be spinning at the correct frequency. To become healthy again, or to maintain a healthy balance or your chakra energy, the individual chakras need to be balanced from time to time. I'm not sure if Chakra meditation is the best meditation to do but I really do believe in the power of meditation and relaxation. More on this tomorrow as Joan Cusack has just uttered the immortal line 'Sometimes I sing and dance around the house in my underwear. Doesn't make me Madonna. Never will'. Have to get back to Working Girl, I know it backwards but it's simply wonderful!

Day Fifteen: A little bit of heart

Dear David,

You made my day! I'm really proud of me too. It's so easy to follow, I'm not starving and I'm really getting into the exercise in a big way. I feel great, energetic, happy and full of beans. Wonderful!

Found an image that tracks the journey quite well! Each of those ladies represents nine pounds so I have lost one a half ladies thus far. I was good today again; mocha shake for breakfast, almonds mid-morning, tuna and salad for lunch, almonds afternoon and shake for dinner. 45 minutes on Mabel and kept my heart rate at 150-155 throughout. What a difference it made and really felt the benefit of it. Colleague sent me a link to a calculator that you can use to calculate your 'zones'. Trick is to stay between zone 2 and 3 at 75% of HRT for good endurance. This is a great start for training for the half marathon.

Signed up for the ballot for the Great North Run. When my sister suggested it last year, the consensus from me and other sister was 'GNR - GTF!'. However, I need something to work towards. I was speaking to a colleague today who was telling me how to get into running training and gave me some great information on using a heart rate monitor to work in HR zones. Going to get launched into it when my fitness is up a little. More here

Another colleague gave me another link to Take to The Streets that helps you design a running program to build yourself up to a half marathon, or the distance of your choice.  It seems that for every 'enabler', there is a person that will have helpful and rousing advice!

I was kicking about on a Google Walk today (when you google something and end up about 300 sites away from where you started) and started looking at and for Infographics. Infographics fill me with great, great joy. I could rave about them for hours - art meets science in a big way. There is loving something a normal amount - I love these more than a normal amount! Infographics are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge. Best I have found yet is a Force-Directed layout on  the Protovis project. This network represents character co-occurrence in the chapters of Victor Hugo's classic novel, Les Misérables. Node colors depict cluster memberships computed by a community-detection algorithm. This project is led by Mike Bostock and Jeff Heer of the Stanford Visualization Group, with significant help from Vadim Ogievetsky.

Found a lovely infographic for vegetables in season on Eat Seasonably. It's an interactive calendar that shows you what fruit and veg is in season in what month. Eat Seasonably celebrates eating the right things at the right time: a crisp salad when it’s hot and sunny, a wholesome stew when it’s cold; strawberries in June, Brussels sprouts in December.Going to try and Eat Seasonably, as well as sensibly this year.

Off to bed.

Day Thirteen: The pies? Who ate them all?

Dear David,

I was reading your book this morning and there was a test that you can do to see if you are in good physical shape. You basically stand in front of the mirror and then wiggle and if your fat moves, you are not toned and at your physical peak. I nearly took my own eye out as waves of blubber undulated from one side to the next. I did, however, solve the mystery of who had eaten all the pies!

Prompted 40 minutes on Mabel, the cross trainer.

Went into Glasgow today and hit Cos and Space NK (again). Quick sting to pick up lovely top that I ho'ed and hummed over yesterday and should have just bought while I was there - 70% off and a great fit. How I love Cos! Between that and Space NK, I have the makings of an addiction.

I did say that I would not weigh myself but I cracked this morning and I have lost a total of 14 pounds - 1 whole stone. Hurray! Did some shopping for some more interesting food. I had shake this morning, flush and cleanse pills and thermobubbles and almonds for snack while on the go. I made calamari and veg for lunch (albeit a little later than I should have had it). It was lush. Took 200g of calamari, broccoli, pak choi, red peppers and kale and fried up with a little drop of spray oil. Delicious. Soaked the calamari in lemon juice and red pepper flakes before cooking. Heaven! Almonds for late snack and shake for dinner methinks.

Marydoll had cream egg in front of me today though and I could have inhaled it, a few times over. Looked great but not worth the guilt and so delighted that I have lost a stone that I resisted the temptation. The raisins are a distant memory.

Still need to find a frog.

Day Twelve: these are not the frogs you are looking for

Dear David,

Erm no.....

Frog hunt failed!

Day Eleven/Twelve: Frogs

Dear David,

Yesterday went well. Usual food intake, including shake for dinner. Ate a handful of raisins in the evening though - first cheat, oh the shame! Gave me gut ache and itchy skin (probably candida related) so that won't be happening again. It was not worth it at all and they did not taste anything like as good as I wanted then to be. Just glad it wasn't half a pound of chocolate or a bottle of wine, which is what I actually wanted!

Went for colonic #2 this morning. As before, but Kim added in herbs that were anti-parasitic so no flies on me! She is a doll! She was telling me all about her chats with the feng shui grand master and how one should alway have a frog in the house, pointing in from the front door to make you lucky. Im getting a frog - with any luck, it'll keep me away from the raisins.

Taking the banana out today to cheer her up as she was a bit peeved last Saturday in town. A combination of clothes not fitting or being too expensive. Mind you, she has a lovely wee figure and think it was more about being a manky student for the fifth year running and dying to start her life proper - it's coming, little angel, take heart! Rousing words are all well and good but I think a wee top from all saints might elevate her mood more effectively!

Off to shop! Have identified a few places I can have plan friendly meals in, with a bit of Meg Ryan tweaking, so I am raring to go. Thermobubbles in glass and I'll be full of pink fizz and energy!!!

Day Ten: Sick

Dear David,

Have strep throat and feel terrible. Went to the fat doctor today too. His name? Professor Lean, no word of a lie. He approved your methods and sent me out the door with a pat on the back for my weight loss thus far. He's a big porridge fan though and thinks I should start the day the Scottish way! He is seeing me again in 6 months. Spurs one on!

Went for green tea after doctor before heading home. I wanted that biscuit, I really did.

Had shake this morning, egg white omelette mid morning with salad, chicken and spinach for lunch and shake for tea.

I wanted toast for breakfast and a mug of tea with milk, beans with cheese on toast for lunch. Maw and Paw demolished chicken fried rice for dinner - I wanted that too.

I hate being sick!

Day Nine: Big glasses

Dear David,

Finished with mocha shake last night and had a gruelling 30 minutes of Mabel the crosstrainer. Started with mocha shake this morning and had almonds mid-morning. Had a fascinating chat with a boy on the bus this morning about the joys of playstation. I have to say I strongly disagreed! I can’t think of anything I would like to do less with two hours free.

Have new glasses which are HUGE and I am loving them. Chap sitting next to me said they put him in mind of Denis Taylor – philistine! I got sunglasses and got them made into normal glasses. I think they are fabulous.

Painted nails last night after having made a discovery. Barry M now does a nail varnish called Effects.

It costs £3.49 and is available online or in Boots the Chemist. It's crackle polish, you put a coat on and the polish separates so a pattern appears in a few moments. Great fun, great result and great distraction from omelette and chips which was served up last night while I drank mocha shake.

Back to the boredom.

Day Eight: Yeast

Dear David,

I thought I would write a little more about the advice that Kim Tan gave me on Candida. The output from colonic indicated yeast overgrow. Candida usually means Candida Albicans, which is a type of yeast. It is a normal in habitant of the human gut but it is responsible for breaking down complex sugars. However, when it becomes the dominant organism in the gut, it can contribute to many problems. An easy way to diagnose yourself is to take a glass of water, spit in it and, after an hour, if the spit has stayed on the top of the water, you are fine. If it has started to sink to the bottom, if there are trails of it in the water, it’s highly likely you have a yeast overgrowth. I have it, of course. I am following most of the diet and supplements to rid myself of this on your plan, David. However, I need to also cut out mushrooms (they are a fungus) and cut out vinegar (too acidic).

Below are the symptoms of Candida;

Bloating and discomfort, especially after meals
Excess flatulence
White coating on tongue
Dry itchy skin
Griping pains in your lower abdomen.
Constipation or diarrhoea
Fatigue or muscle weakness
Muscle or joint pains, or arthritis
'Brain fog', feelings of unreality or memory loss
Thrush, athlete's foot, ringworm or fungal infection of your nails
Urinary tract infection or vaginal discharge
Depression or tearfulness
'Low' immune system and frequent infections
Sensitivities to foods, tobacco smoke, chemical odours or perfume
Cravings for sugar, bread or alcohol
Symptoms worse on damp, muggy days or in damp, mouldy places

You are particularly likely to have it if you have taken;

Antibiotics taken for more than one month or more than four times within 12 months
Prednisolone or other steroid drugs taken for more than two weeks
Anti-ulcer drugs (e.g. Zantac, Tagamet) taken for more than two months
Birth control pill or hormone replacement therapy for more than two years

To eradicate Candida, you must detox, follow a strict diet and take anti-fungal or anti-parasitic supplements.

Step 1: Detox: Colonics (4-6 Treatments, after that as when needed)
High doses of Probiotics, introduce immediately (no less than 20 billion, with as many strains as possible) for 6 months, or more, depending on how you are recovering

Step 2: Strict Diet: Wheat free, dairy free (especially cow’s milk), sugar-free, yeast-free, and alcohol-free. Do this for 6-12 months and if condition improves gradually reintroduce each item.

Step 3: Anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-parasite: Take supplements such as ‘Floraguard’ or Collodial Silver or Grape-seed extract. Try Garlic caps, oregano, caprillic acid and walnut tincture.

Anti-Candida Diet

AVOID

Aged cheeses
Alcohol
Chocolate
Dried and fresh fruits
Fermented foods
Mushrooms
Vinegar
Glutenous foods (wheat, rye, barley) including pasta
All sugars, honeys and syrups (that includes any ‘ose’, like lactose, sucrose etc)
Foods that contain yeast or mold
Sweetened yogurt
Sweetened Coffee, fruit teas, and soft drinks
Condiments that contain sugar and vinegar (ketchup, pickles, steak sauce etc.)
Vegetables like beetroot, canned tomatoes, carrots, cucumber skins, potato skins
Meats that come from animals fed antibiotics and hormones
Processed frozen dinners and quick meals

EAT

Green leafy Vegetables (including plenty of raw garlic),
Protein foods (beef, chicken, eggs, fish that are antibiotic and hormone free)
Live yogurt cultures (both dairy and non-dairy,) whey, acidophilus (non-sweetened types of yogurt) *
Green Algae (such as chlorella)
Nuts and seeds
Healthy oils (olive, canola, fish)
Non-glutenous grains (like millet, rice, rice bran, and oat bran) *
Some fruits (10%) such as black berries, blue berries, melon and other low sugar high nutrient fruits *
Plenty of Water (if you are constipated, try to only drink warm water)
Unsweetened Taheebo Pau d’Arco tea
Olive leaf supplement
Pumpkin skin *
Virgin Coconut Oil *
Maqui Berry
Spirulina
Quinoa *
Fresh Avocado *
Manuka Honey *

(I have put a star next to things that are not allowed in starting phase of the New York Plan)

I am going to get some of the extra supplements from Kim on Saturday for the colonic round two. I need to have a sit and work out all the stuff I am taking as well and see if there are any crossovers or I am double dosing myself with stuff that is in one of the shakes/supplements from your plan.

Here are also some exercises and some lovely reflexology worksheets from Kim. The reflexology sheet shows you that you need massage all facial pressure points for 9 circular motions, always clockwise, on each point. For point number nine of the diagram, the famous dimple, you should massage for 15-20 minutes.

Day Eight: Yum

Dear David,

On train, it's 7am. Almost made it onto Mabel this morning but sleep prevailed - no more laziness after today. I'm being a bit of an excuse monkey. I was shattered this morning because Glee and Gary Tank Commander were on last night and I stayed up late.

Oh I hate commuting, yes I do. I can't drive due to years in Italy and never having to. Between bikes, scooters and public transport, the need was never strong enough. Back in Scotland, this is not the case and I have to learn, I simply must! I am too fragile for public transport and too obstreperous for its inconsistencies!

Had mocha shake this morning - yum, yum, yum! Creamy, thick, tasty and less grainy tasting that the vanilla one. Result.

Brown bagged some turkey breast and spinach for lunch and have almonds for mid and late afternoon. I need to cook more and get a little more inventive as meals are becoming a wee bit boring due to lack of time and lack of imagination.

Anyways, over and out. The woman is coming with the tea trolly.
